It was a battle of the birds when the War Eagles of Sycamore hosted the Eagles of Westmoreland for some Tuesday-night basketball on January 14.
The hometown ladies took the floor against a fierce group of Lady Eagles who proved to be a worthy adversary. The War Eagle appeared sluggish, missing numerous shots allowing the visitors to take advantage of the situation. The visiting team ran up a 19-7 lead in the first quarter, and continued the reign of terror scoring 14 more in the second quarter, holding the lady War Eagles to just 3 points. When the ladies returned from the half-time break, the visiting ladies settled in and kept the pace hot with accurate shooting and fast breaks, eventually taking home a 54-19 victory.
Callie Gudino led the scoring for the War Eagles with 11 points.
When the men took the floor, they came out flying with a blistering pace, shocking the visiting Eagles with a 20-9 first quarter. But the joy soon ended as the guys from Westmoreland came bouncing back with ease, heading to the lockers at halftime down by just three points. Upon returning, the two teams played head-to-head with neither gaining ground. But in the end, it was the War Eagles who celebrated a 45-40 win.
Bailey Chapman and Grady McPherson led the War Eagles netting 12 points each.
