In the Pleasant View Volunteer Fire Department’s annual meeting on January 13, Chief PJ Duncan shared an overview of the department’s work in 2019, which included responding to 2,555 calls in their service area of Robertson and Cheatham Counties. Those calls ranged from structure fires to traffic crashes to citizen assistance. The total – 2,555 calls – was the highest tally in the department’s records, and while it only represented a 2.4% increase over 2018, the number was a 70% increase over the last decade, Duncan said. Volunteer firefighters logged 45,939 hours of work and 7,874 hours of training, the chief explained.
Other highlights within the department included the new fire Station 1, which is estimated to be completed next month, as well as a new tanker truck and securing funding for a new ladder truck from the towns of Pleasant View and Coopertown.
In the community, PVVFD firefighters installed 4,101 smoke alarms in their district in homes which had non-working alarms or didn’t have alarms at all. Volunteer firefighters also helped educate more than 3,000 students at local schools about fire safety and having a safety plan in place with their families. The PVVFD also re-launched its Explorer Post 602 program for students ages 12 – 17. The first meeting will be held Feb. 6 from 6 – 8:30 p.m. at 1129 Main Street in Pleasant View.
