CCSD Addresses School Safety, Security in Wake of Nashville Shooting

The Cheatham County School District released this statement earlier today (January 27, 2025):

In the wake of the recent school shooting in Nashville, we want to assure our Cheatham County families that we take the safety and security of our students and staff very seriously.

We understand that you may have concerns about the safety of your children and all children and about safety and security measures and practices that are in place and carried out daily in our district at each of our schools.

We want you to be aware of the security measures already in place throughout the district and the efforts to reinforce those measures:

• The district and each individual school have a comprehensive crisis plan in place and they are continually reviewed and modified. Each school also has a safety team, and they meet regularly to discuss safety measures.

• Tennessee requires all public schools to complete at least one intruder drill each year, and our district requires additional ones throughout the year. The purpose of these drills is to equip all students and adults with the knowledge they need to quickly make their way to safety in the event of an emergency.

• The district works closely daily with the Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies in the county to ensure our schools are safe. The district has ongoing collaborative meetings with various county agencies to review, discuss and plan all response techniques.

• The Cheatham County Sheriff’s Office provides trained and armed School Resource Officers (SROs) on each school campus. Our district is fortunate to have 16 SROs covering 13 schools. Our SROs work with our district safety team to assess school security daily and proactively plan ways to strengthen the security of our buildings for the safety of our students and staff.

• The district has a school safety e-mail tip line. If students, parents or community members know of an unsafe situation in one of our schools, they can e-mail that information to tip@ccstn.org. All information will remain confidential. When making your report, please include as much detailed information as possible because doing so will greatly assist school administrators in investigating and addressing the concerns. Please keep in mind that our tip line is not a method of ongoing communication regarding the status of the reported tip.

• The district has secured entrances in all our buildings.

• The district has a standardized method of building entry, sign-in and visitor tracking. For all visitors and guests who attempt to enter our school buildings, a driver’s license or government issued ID card is required. When coming to a school, please have your identification ready and be prepared to state the reason why you are at the school. We encourage parents and/or guardians to schedule their visits.

• The district has implemented security measures at all sporting events, and this includes that only one clear tote bag per person is permitted. Other items must be searched upon entry.

• The district has installed security window film at all our schools. This product is designed to strengthen windows, potentially delaying an individual by several minutes from getting into a school.

We also ask for your cooperation in the following ways:

• Talk to your children: Discuss safety rules and procedures with your children and encourage them to follow them.

• Report suspicious activity: If you see something that concerns you, please contact the school immediately or report it via our email tipline at tip@ccstn.org.

• Stay informed: Monitor your child’s social media accounts and check their backpacks.

School safety is everyone’s responsibility. Thank you for doing your part to ensure our schools are a safe place where our students can learn and grow in a caring environment.

As always, we will continue to work to ensure the highest level of safety possible, and we will continue to update you on our progress.

Thank you for your support and trust in our district.
